How do I measure an area for tiles?
It is a very straight forward process to find out. Please follow our simple 3 step guide below and it will take you no more than 10 minutes.

STEP 1 – Before you begin
First off, you should take all measurements in metres. This makes calculating how many tiles you need a piece of cake.
Next, ensure when you order, you order enough material from the outset. Tiles can vary minutely from batch to batch in both size and colour, so no guarantees can be given we can supply from the same batch when ordered at separate times.
With those two pearls of wisdom in mind, we are ready to start.
Measuring a floor for tiles
Draw a rough sketch of your floor. Nothing fancy but large enough to mark each straight edge with a dimension. See example below.
Break the plan down into a series of squares and/or rectangles. See the example below. This will enable you to multiply the length and width of each individual square and/or rectangle together, add up the totals and get the desired answer required in square metres.
Therefore, your calculation for the total floor area here will be:
2.6m x 1.8m + 1.1m x 0.7m
Which equals: 4.68 sq.m + 0.77 sq.m = 5.45 square metres.
This is the size of the space you are looking to tile.
STEP 2 – Adding extra to cover cutting wastage
Next step is to add some additional meterage to the size of the space to cover any cutting wastage. It is essential to add between 10% and 20% to avoid running out of tiles.
As a general rule: the larger the tile, the greater the wastage. Please follow this simple wastage allowance guide:

|Up to 300mm x 300mm||add an additional 10%|
|600mm x 600mm||add an additional 15%|
|800mm x 800mm||add an additional 20%|
So, if we had chosen a tile of 300mm x 300mm, we would add a 10% cutting allowance to the ‘size of the space’:
5.45 square metres x 10% = 0.545 square metres.
Add this to size of the space area: 5.45 + 0.545 = 5.995 square metres.
Rounding up to the nearest full metre, you would need 6 square metres of tiles.
STEP 3 – Working out how many tiles you need to order
The final step. Using the example above, we know we need to order 6 square metres worth of tiles, as this is the size of the space we are going to tile + the allowance for cutting wastage + rounded up to the nearest metre, andgiven we are interestedina 300mm x 300mm tile.
On every Only Tiles product page, under ‘Quick Overview’, you can find the amount of tiles per square metre in Orange.
You should take this number and multiply it by the number of square metres required.
For example, if the tile we are interested in is ‘Paris Grey 300x300’ and we know we require 6 square metres, we can see on the ‘Paris Grey 300x300’ product page it states there are 11 tiles per square metre. The calculation then is:
6 square metres x 11 tiles per square metre = 66 tiles
You need to order 66 tiles of Paris Grey 300x300.
Add this volume to your basket and follow the simple check out process. Your tiles will be with you pronto.
Measuring for border tiles
To calculate how many borders you require you will need the linear distance that needs to be covered. This is simply the horizontal straight line distance right around the room. Take a look at the sketch of your room. See our earlier example. Add together the length of each wall.
Total linear distance is:
2.5m + 1.1m + 0.7m + 1.5m + 1.8m + 2.6m = 10.2 linear metres.
You may wish to deduct from this any distance where the border will not go. For instance where the door and window are. If the border runs under the window, do not deduct this distance.
Therefore, for this example we assume the door has a width of 0.8m and a window of 1.0m. Add these together and deduct them from the total linear distance around the room.
So, 10.2 – 1.8 = 8.4 linear metres.
We have chosen a border that is 300mm long which equates to 0.3m.
So, 8.4 divided by 0.3 = 28 borders. Generally, we would suggest adding a couple to allow for cutting as before.
You need to order 30 borders for this room.
